On 1 October 2008 the rail industry in New Zealand became a single entity. While its legal name is the New Zealand Railways Corporation (NZRC), it has chosen KiwiRail as its trading name.
The re-consolidation of the industry follows the Government's 1 July 2008 purchase of the rail and ferry operating businesses previously owned by private sector company Toll Holdings Ltd and trading as Toll NZ Ltd. The Government had previously purchased the rail infrastructure from Toll holdings in 2004.
KiwiRail is a State Owned Enterprise and as such has shareholding Ministers. The Ministers' state their expectations to the KiwiRail Board in an annual Ministerial letter.
Today, KiwiRail is New Zealand's largest land transport provider, one of the country's biggest tourism operators and one of the country's most significant property owners and developers.
Our challenge is to improve the quality of our assets and services and to compete on even terms with other modes of transport while also cooperating with other players to create solutions for customers.
